The Shoulder Blade (Scapula) A bone overlooked most of the time in trying to get a longer upper arm. They work together for extension and effortless movement. IF places wrong or too short (which so many people over look) it throws the whole movement effort out the door. The shoulder assembly is a complex interaction of bone, muscle, connective tissue, including tendons and ligaments. It all has to come together for the dog to have optimum front movement. The scapula does not articulate with any bones at its top, but is attached by four muscles to the spinal column at a number of places from the first cervical to the ninth thoracic vertebra and to the first seven or eight ribs. This is the case whether the dog is steep-shouldered or well-laid back, so differences between the two types must be due to minor differences in scapula and humerus lengths and ratios; perhaps the lengths of the vertebrae; and the tightness and condition of the ligaments and muscles that hold the bones in their positions. The scapula and the humerus play an equal role in the front angles. The length of the shoulder blade is just as important as the length of the upper arm. You can have equal length scapula and upper arm but both can be too short for the size of the dog. In my efforts to always trying to improve fronts I have actually measured the length of the scapula before checking to see how the humerus lines up. My findings with respect to normal size Bassets going from 50 to 65 lbs.is a scapula no shorter than 8". When the scapula is too short they have to spread too wide at teh withers to get the feet to hit the ground. this will cause too much space between the front legs and teh feet can not converge to a center line for efficient movement. When trying to stack them you will not be able to get the front feet to land in a desirable 2 finger spread. The wither spread is important when going over a dog. It will be way too wide when the scapula is too short. The withers on a dog are at the highest point of their shoulder tips, just where the back of the neck attaches to the body. The withers are often where the height of the dog is measured to breed standards. When the dog is standing you should not be able to put more than 2 fingers between the tips of the 2 shoulder blades. It goes with 2 fingers between the 2 front feet when in a stacked position. Another important part of the scapula is the "layback" long and well laid back to show a nice length of neck which keeps the dogs head in a comfortable position when nose is to the ground. More is mentioned about that in the front assembly article.

The angle created by the shoulder and upper arm will be echoed by the angle formed in the rear by the femur and tibia. The easy line to find on real dogs is the one from the stifle joint to the hock joint. The red lines show the extended position of the legs during a trot. A “balanced” dog will have equal angles in the front and rear, and when trotting the legs will give the appearance of equal triangles under the body. Remember that the front leg can only extend in a straight line from the shoulder. This is why the shoulder angle is all-important in reach. Notice the position of the sternum when the angle are in the right place. |
